I love this title which means “for the sake of the song.” As songwriters, Dr. Donaghy and I find pure joy in just writing for the sake of writing.
Truly, it is our kuleana, our responsibility as songwriters, to document our current experiences in this historical time, so that generations past our lifetime will have the proverbial breadcrumbs. They will be able to find out how we lived; how we loved; how we related to each other as a community; how we overcame challenges in life; how life mattered to us.
Mele are not simply written. They are written for things that have significance in our lives – people, places, emotions and experiences. They reflect how we think and feel today so that they will document our experiences and out times for future generations. “Nona Ke Mele” translates as “those for whom the songs are written.”
